A Voice of Hope and Humanity
Beverly Thomson’s passing in 2025 left Canada reflecting not only on a remarkable journalist but also on the enduring example of a woman who lived by what she called the Three P’s: Purpose, Perseverance, and People-oriented compassion. Through these, Beverly inspired a nation.
Purpose — anchoring life in meaning
Beverly’s broadcast career was marked by clarity of mission. She was not content simply to read the news; she sought to bring visibility and dignity to people’s stories. When breast cancer interrupted her life in 2002, she did not retreat. Instead, she leaned into advocacy, speaking openly of her own fight.
As she once put it, “The message of hope has to get out there because cancer isn’t a death sentence. If one person feels more hopeful having listened to…” then the effort was worth it. That insistence on purpose made her journalism more than a job — it was service.
Perseverance — courage in the long fight
Cancer was not a chapter but a companion in Beverly’s life. She persevered through treatments, through setbacks, through uncertainty, yet she remained on air. Colleagues recall how she would arrive fully prepared, professional, calm, never letting her private struggle diminish her public voice.
Her perseverance shone through her consistency — Canada AM, CTV News Channel, charity work, volunteer service. It earned her the Order of Canada in 2019, recognizing both her professional excellence and her tireless advocacy.
People-oriented — compassion at the core
Perhaps most striking was how Beverly treated people. Seán O’Shea remembered: “Bev was always professional and well-prepared for her interviews. She took her work as a journalist seriously, herself not so much. She loved people and really connected with our audience. She also loved to laugh.”
Bell Media’s own tribute echoed this: “Bev’s natural on-air style created an immediate connection with viewers. For decades, she also made a significant impact across the country with her vocal support and advocacy for cancer charities.”
These words confirm what viewers already sensed: compassion wasn’t a layer she added, it was who she was.
A lighter human touch
Beverly’s humanity often shone through in small, playful asides — even a simple remark like “They were vocal too!” carried warmth and humour.
These glimpses showed her audiences not just a polished broadcaster but a real person who could laugh, relate, and connect.
An encouragement to humanity
FromBeverly’s story, three encouragements emerge:
- Live with purpose: Find meaning beyond yourself, and struggles become part of a larger mission.
- Persevere with courage: Hardship does not have to silence you; it can sharpen your voice.
- Stay people-oriented: True success is measured not only in ratings or awards, but in compassion shared, in dignity affirmed, in hope offered.
Beverly Thomson embodied these truths. Her life remains an invitation: that we, too, might live our days with the same purposeful compassion.
