Mission and History

Our History

From Crisis to Hope: A Movement That Starts With You

Since 2000, HUG (Humanity Unlimited Global Inc.) has been a beacon of hope for those navigating life’s darkest moments. As a federally registered Canadian charity—with roots stretching back to 1993—we’ve pioneered new ways of understanding suicide, mental health, and resilience. Through our core program, Your Life Counts, we’ve helped save lives in over 35 countries, turning despair into hope, one story at a time. 2 We’re humbled by the recognition we’ve received, but the real reward is seeing lives transformed—yours, theirs, ours. Our work nurtures emotional health in individuals, families, and communities, steadying them before trauma becomes crisis. Because hope isn’t just about surviving; it’s about rediscovering your place in the world.

A Mission Reimagined: Filling the Gaps Where Help Is Needed Most

After two decades on the frontlines of crisis response, we made a bold shift. While those in immediate danger of suicide are directed to crisis lines and trusted partners, we now focus on the people who too often slip through the cracks: those vulnerable to suicidal thoughts, struggling in silence, or feeling unseen or unheard by the system.

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed a global need for connection and support—so we evolved. HUG was born, a name that reflects our expanded mission: to embrace humanity in all its complexity. Your Life Counts remains the heart of our work, a lifeline for those who need it most.

You Are the Reason We Exist

Since 2000, HUG has helped thousands of people steady themselves when life feels unsteady. But here’s the truth: none of this happens without you. Whether you’re someone who’s been helped by our programs, a volunteer, a donor, or simply someone who believes in the power of hope—you are the movement. Because at the end of the day, it’s simple: Your. Life. Counts.

Join Us: Be Part of the Change

Because when we say Your Life Counts, we mean yours too.

The HUG Mission

HUG nurtures emotionally healthy, resilient individuals, families, and communities, steadying them before trauma escalates into crisis. We work alongside frontline agencies to help avert crisis at its source, restoring hope and reconnecting people with their reasons to live early in the process. By addressing needs upstream, we reduce the burden on emergency response. HUG drives innovative, life-affirming strategies through education, research, empowerment, training, and advocacy. Through our global resources and strategic alliances, we empower people to build resilience and thrive before they need saving.

Building Resilience, Saving Lives

HUG exists to build resilience in individuals, families, and communities—transforming trauma into strength and despair into hope. At its heart, HUG confronts the global suicide emergency: a silent crisis where every statistic represents shattered lives and broken connections. Each year:

  • 1 million lives are lost to suicide (WHO)
  • A life ends every 40 seconds
  • 22+ attempts occur for every death – each one a cry for connection
The Power of Resilience

Suicide is not just a personal tragedy—it’s a global epidemic that thrives in isolation and despair. HUG’s core program, Your Life Counts, turns this reality on its head by:

  • Breaking the silence around trauma and mental health.
  • Empowering communities to recognize warning signs and offer support.
  • Creating pathways to hope for those who feel unseen or unheard.
A Call to Action

HUG’s tagline, “Building Resilience, Saving Lives,” is more than words—it’s a promise. It’s a commitment to transforming pain into purpose, crisis into connection, and isolation into belonging. Together, we can build a world where no one has to face their darkest moments alone.

Why This Work Is Urgent
In 2014, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared suicide prevention a global imperative, framing it as a public health crisis that demands collective action. HUG answers this call by:

Preventing Crisis Before It Starts – Partnering with frontline agencies to intervene early, not just in emergencies.

Driving Life-Affirming Change – Through education, research, empowerment, training, and advocacy, HUG equips communities with tools to foster resilience and hope.

Meeting Evolving Needs Globally – Leveraging strategic alliances and resources to adapt to cultural, economic, and systemic challenges worldwide.

Alignment with the United Nations
HUG’s work directly supports UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) – Reducing suicide rates and promoting mental health for all.

SDG 4 (Quality Education) – Training communities to recognize trauma and respond with compassion.

SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) – Ensuring vulnerable populations have access to life-saving support.

SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) – Advocating for policies that protect mental health and prioritize prevention.

Our Impact

Vision

We envision a world where no one is left unseen in their pain. A world where families and individuals affected by grief, trauma, and suicidal struggles are embraced with empathy, supported with dignity, and empowered to heal. Through advocacy, education, and community, HUG seeks to transform how society responds to loss and suffering, creating pathways of resilience and hope for the future.

Hope in Action

Through its programs, outreach, and partnerships, HUG has touched the lives of thousands worldwide. Whether someone is in crisis, healing from trauma, or searching for purpose, HUG offers practical tools, actionable strategies, and compassionate human connection to help them move forward.

Changing Lives

We help people restore hope, embrace their self-worth, and see life from a new perspective. Empowering someone to say, “My life counts,” can create a ripple effect—strengthening families, friends, and entire communities.

Global Commitment

HUG answers the call of the United Nations, World Health Organization, and global partners to confront suicide head-on, delivering life-affirming support, education, and development worldwide.

Core Values

At HUG, our values guide everything we do:

  • Compassion: We meet every person with empathy and kindness, walking alongside them in their journey toward healing.
  • Dignity: We believe every life has value and honor each story with respect, confidentiality, and care.
  • Connection: We create safe spaces of community and belonging so that no one faces grief, trauma, or suicidal struggles alone.
  • Hope: We nurture resilience and renewal, holding space for healing and the possibility of a brighter future.

Advocacy: We give voice to those who are unheard, working to close gaps in systems of care and ensuring that every person in need is seen, supported, and never left behind

The HUG position statement on suicide: HUG adopts the statement of Living Works – reproduced and quoted with permission: Suicide is a Community Health problem:
We hold that suicide is best viewed broadly as an issue for the entire community. We invite those with social, public or mental health perspectives to join this broader perspective. Everyone who wants to help is welcome. Many so called ‘ordinary’ citizens have made anything but ordinary contributions to suicide prevention in modern times. We reject any attempt to maintain an exclusionary position. To make suicide one group’s territory is to re-stigmatize suicide in modern clothing by implying that suicide is so special, dangerous or unusual that only some can deal with it. Such a restriction also reduces the range and numbers of people who could help prevent suicide. Suicide is not the domain of any one discipline or viewpoint. We need everyone, working together, to bring an end to the long history of avoiding the community consequences of suicide.
