Since 2000, HUG (Humanity Unlimited Global Inc.) has been a beacon of hope for those navigating life’s darkest moments. As a federally registered Canadian charity—with roots stretching back to 1993— we’ve pioneered new ways of understanding suicide, mental health, and resilience.
HUG believes in the power of “upstream” support—addressing the fundamental needs of individuals to help them find their footing before trauma escalates into crisis.
While immediate crisis response is vital, our mission is to fill the gaps where the human element is often overlooked. Through our core program, Your Life Counts, we have helped transform despair into hope in over 35 countries. HUG works to steady people in their most vulnerable moments, helping them rediscover their purpose, their self-worth, and their fundamental will to live.

Connection, on Your Terms
In a fast-moving world, it can feel like you are expected to always be “on” or to fit into a certain mould. While we recognize that medical support and medication are vital tools for many, we have learned over 25 years that pills alone cannot mend a broken heart.
True healing begins with connection, but we know that connection doesn’t have to be loud or overwhelming. It can be a gentle, respectful presence. Our approach is guided, in part, by the African philosophy of Ubuntu: “I am, because you are.” We believe we are all woven together and that we find our greatest strength when we support one another. We focus on the whole human being, standing alongside you while honoring your boundaries and your unique way of navigating the world. We believe the capacity for human resilience and compassion is truly unlimited.

A Mission Reimagined: Filling the Gaps Where Help Is Needed Most
After two decades on the frontlines of crisis response, we made a bold shift. While those in immediate danger of suicide are directed to crisis lines and trusted partners, we now focus on the people who too often slip through the cracks: those vulnerable to suicidal thoughts, struggling in silence, or feeling unseen or unheard by the system.
The COVID-19 pandemic revealed a global need for connection and support—so we evolved. HUG was born, a name that reflects our expanded mission: to embrace humanity in all its complexity. Your Life Counts remains the heart of our work, a lifeline for those who need it most.

Our commitment to the individual is reflected in our commitment to the world. We recognize that the challenges we face—loneliness, disenfranchisement, and the loss of belonging—are part of a global crisis that requires collective, systemic action.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified suicide prevention as a critical public health priority. HUG meets this challenge by aligning our mission with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs, ensuring our local impact contributes to a global standard of well-being:

SDG 4 (Quality Education): Empowering communities to understand and respond to human struggle with compassion.

With roots stretching back to 2000, HUG has been a constant, reliable presence. We have worked tirelessly to advocate for a more compassionate way of understanding human struggle—often swimming against the tide to ensure that the “human” is never lost in the system.
Our commitment to being a voice for change is amplified by the network of partner organizations we stand beside. Together, we advocate for a world that respects the individual. Our journey includes:
Legislative Catalyst: We were proud to act as the catalyst in the development and success of Federal Act of Parliament Bill C-300, helping to shape a national framework for suicide prevention in Canada.
Recognized Excellence: Our work has been honoured with the National President’s Award from the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention, the PREVNet National Award for excellence in bullying prevention, and the Hacking Health “People’s Choice Award,” among others.
A Proven Foundation: From being a CBC ‘Champion of Change’ nominee to receiving various community recognitions, our history is built on a foundation of integrity and a refusal to give up on people.

The HUG position statement on suicide: HUG adopts the statement of Living Works – reproduced and quoted with permission: Suicide is a Community Health problem:
“We hold that suicide is best viewed broadly as an issue for the entire community. We invite those with social, public or mental health perspectives to join this broader perspective. Everyone who wants to help is welcome. Many so called ‘ordinary’ citizens have made anything but ordinary contributions to suicide prevention in modern times. We reject any attempt to maintain an exclusionary position. To make suicide one group’s territory is to re-stigmatize suicide in modern clothing by implying that suicide is so special, dangerous or unusual that only some can deal with it. Such a restriction also reduces the range and numbers of people who could help prevent suicide. Suicide is not the domain of any one discipline or viewpoint. We need everyone, working together, to bring an end to the long history of avoiding the community consequences of suicide.”
